Dalegarth Visitor Centre

Pop impresario and avid steam enthusiast Pete Waterman opened our new Visitor Centre in 2007 and from there we have gone from strength-to-strength culminating in the autumn of 2009 with the arrival of our children’s play area which was opened by HRH Princess Alexandra.

Upstairs at Dalegarth and level with the platform we have:

Fellbites Eatery

Our modern premises seat 60 people at any one time, while there are further tables available in the Eskdale Room on all occasions when a function isn’t booked.

Fellbites Eatery serves everything from hot and cold drinks, sandwiches and cakes made on the premises, to full meals made to order. Wherever possible our chefs use local ingredients to ensure a taste of Lakeland with a sprinkling of flair.

Fellbites Eatery is open whenever trains are running...

The Scafell Gift Shop

Care and time has been put into the selection of an inspirational range of gifts and mementoes for all the family.

We have pocket money lines and bigger toys for children and nursery gifts for babies, while our stocks include a fair complement of character merchandise too.

For the ladies we have gifts for the home, and great lines for a little holiday self indulgence – handbags in canvas and leather and a modern take on ornaments immediately spring to mind – while our stylish and colourful casual rainwear ensures that you’ll never get caught out.

For the rest of the family we’ve a great range of Lake District books, including our own exclusive Wainwright ‘Walks from Ratty’, not to mention new railway mementoes for a wider audience.

The Eskdale Room

Downstairs from Fellbites Eatery and the Scafell Gift Shop - but level with our car park - is Dalegarth’s Eskdale Room; a multi-purpose venue that is home to our free entry Romans in Eskdale exhibition, ideal for pre-booked functions catering for up to 100 people, coach groups, or as an overspill to Fellbites Eatery. The Eskdale Room guarantees that on a rainy day – not that there are many in the Western Lake District – there is ample shelter with things to do on hand …

The Romans in Eskdale exhibition outlines four centuries of occupation in Ravenglass and Eskdale as well as widening out to the coastal frontier defences and even Hadrian’s Wall … With superb photography of some of the most fascinating Roman remains in the north of England, clear story boards tell the tale in an easy to read manner.

Cycle hire with Budgie Bikes – the starting point for many ‘Walks from Ratty’ with AW – close to Boot village – by Whillan Beck and only a short stroll from the River Esk – surrounded by some of Lakeland’s highest, craggiest fells – a great place to spend a little time.

Dalegarth Visitor CentreOpened by HRH Princess Alexander our new activity play area at Dalegarth has already proved a great hit with the children as the photograph shows. Literally somewhere for the little ones to let off steam!
