Steam and Romans

Herdwick sheep

A current inhabitant of Hardknott Roman Fort in residence! Meet Helena the Herdwick and her chums on our bespoke Steam and Romans adventures.

Back by popular demand, our bespoke delve into the Roman history of Ravenglass and Eskdale includes a guided tour of the substantial remains of the Roman bath house at Ravenglass - followed by a steam train journey to Dalegarth, where your lunch is served at Fellbites Eatery, surrounded by our much admired Roman exhibition. Then it's the ascent of Hardknott Pass by minibus to Hardknott Roman Fort, surely the most spectacular setting for any Roman fort in England. Your guided tour amidst some of England's highest and craggiest mountains takes you far beyond the lives of the inhabitants of the second century fort and is definitely not to be missed. Safely back in the Eskdale valley, your steam train awaits to escort you back to Glannaventa, the Roman name for Ravenglass.

Price - £22.00 per adult including train fares, minibus, and lunch. Stout walking shoes or boots advised. Limited numbers per excursion - pre-booking essential. Timing details and booking - 01229 717171

Saturday 9th October – Save our Squirrels Special

Squirrel NutkinWith red squirrels frequenting the valleys we’ve always tried to help keep them there. This year we have various fund raising activities at our fingertips and this is one of them.

Simply join the Red Express – the 10.30am departure from Ravenglass – pay our standard fare and we will donate half the ticket money to Save Our Squirrels. It’s national Save Our Squirrels week – we’d like to think the train was packed to overflowing!

See our News Page for details of other Save our Squirrels fund raising activities.

Friday 29th and Saturday 30th October – Improved Ghostly goings on!

Ghost trainWe’re going to ham it up with a ghastly, grizzly, ghostly journey for you all in Darkest Eskdale. The express ghost trains leave Ravenglass on their after hours missions at 5.30pm and 6.30pm. Once at Dalegarth, there’s a bowel of soup, or dead men’s sausage fingers, thrown into the cauldron for all travelers. Clank those chains to a tune or two while you are there and we are expecting you all to make an evening of it by dressing up too. Can we run to a vampireal prize for the best ghoul of the evening – we shall see!

On the way back the trains travel at a snail’s pace so ghoul spotting takes over. How many can you count and which one is the scariest?

This year to improve your comfort there’s no bed of nails, no ducking stools, but there are numbered seats for each carriage, guaranteeing families can sit together and there’s no scrabble to find a place.

Two after hours trains per day – 5.30pm and 6.30pm. Pre-booking essential.
